The Challenges of Parenting Children

If you are like many people, then your parenting skills were learned as you were raised by your parents or guardians. Parenting children is a rewarding but difficult task and it is not always easy to find the right balance of love, discipline and encouragement to raise a healthy and happy child.

The Challenges of Parenting Children

Certain parenting issues, such as caring for your child's self-esteem, are greatly influenced by the amount of time you spend with them; however, the most important thing is quality time. With the busy lifestyle that many adults face today, many usually think of the next thing to do rather than focusing directly on the child. Parents need to keep in mind that not being in tune with your child's concerns, dreams, fears, etc. will often lead to unsatisfactory child behavior if they feel they are not getting enough attention.

When raising children, it is very easy to get them to become what is called a deaf parent, as statistics tell us that we make more than 1800 compliance requests from them every day. This is because we tend to yell and swear rather than use actions, but in many situations actions work better than words. For example, when raising a child, instead of constantly telling them to roll up their dirty socks before throwing them in the bin, simply don't wash them until they learn to unroll them before putting them away with the dirty clothes.

Good parenting involves giving your children a way to feel some power; otherwise, they usually find ways to get it themselves, usually with undesirable results. One way to do this is to give them a choice. For example, you should insist that they keep their own room neat and tidy, or that they help with some aspect of cooking the daily meals. Don't do any chores or work for them, even if it's less of a hassle for you, because it can make them feel unimportant or worthless. Also, if the child is testing water or having a tantrum, then the best thing to do is to leave the room and tell them where you will be when they are ready to calm down and try again.

Experts recommend that you leave natural consequences when raising children, as this will help them avoid some problems in the future. Interfering with consequences while raising children will not help them avoid the same situation in the future. If your child forgets their lunch money, experts recommend that you don't bring them lunch, but you should let them either try to find a solution or maybe get by without remembering next time.
