Electric scooters are quickly replacing gas scooters as vehicles for people with reduced mobility. A large proportion of mobility scooter users, such as the elderly and the disabled, choose electric scooters for their convenience, comfort and higher speed
Electric scooters need batteries to operate. A typical mobility scooter would require two 12 volt batteries. Sealed lead acid batteries are used and a charger is often supplied on board. Chargers have one plug-in AC point, but newer models have two points, one on the side and one on the back of the scooter. This allows the user to charge the vehicle without dismounting.

At first, electric mobility scooters were rejected by buyers. The reason was the low life of the batteries. Earlier batteries required repeated charging; therefore, the scooters could not be used for a long time. However, with the invention of more sophisticated battery technology, batteries are operational for longer periods of time, providing a range of approximately 8 to 10 hours per charge, which translates to a range of 20 to 30 miles. Modern batteries can provide electric scooters with speeds of 4 to 8 mph. The batteries are available in versions from 18 AH to 75 AH. The power consumption of the scooter's motor is determined by the battery version.
Electric scooters come with several convenient features for users. They have a highly flexible tiller that can be used to steer the scooter in any direction. Their seats are fixed on stems, which can be sliding or rotating. Some seats can rotate up to 360 degrees, giving the user the freedom to move in any way they want. The seats are upholstered and can have headrests for added comfort. Electric scooters are also equipped with carriers attached to the handlebars or on the back end of the seat.

There are two basic versions of the electric scooter – the folding type and the utility type. Folding electric scooters are very popular. They can be folded into four sections and stowed away when not in use. Utility scooters are sleeker and can be used for longer distances, but cannot be disassembled.
Electric mobility scooters are more expensive than gas or mechanized scooters. It costs around $1000. However, if scooters are prescribed by doctors, then their costs are covered by health insurance. Electric scooters and their components are also exempt from VAT for the elderly and the disabled.
